Home made meals for cat and dog

Many pets are too fat. Don't give your pet too many treats and keep you to the maximum quantity of daily food that the manufacturer indicates on the package. Manufacturers of pet food produce quite balanced food for your pet, this is just great! The problem arises when your dog or cat doesn't like the pet food. To give your pet left-overs and treats is not an optimal alternative, because pets - like humans - daily need nutrients available in fresh vegetables and fruit, cereals, fresh meat and fish, dairy products.

You can prepare home made meals for your pet, provided you make sure that you vary the meals and that the daily menu contains all the nutrients needed for a healthy pet life. Cats need more proteins, that is why dog food is less suitable for cats. The other way round, dogs are allowed to eat cat food. Especially for small dogs who often are rather picky with food, it can be a solution to feed them cat food, as they need less of it to eat than a portion of dog food.

Below I give you a recipe for home made pet food. You can feed it both to your cat and dog. There are enough proteins in the daily menu to keep cats healthy. The amount is based on a small pet with an optimal weight of 5 kg. Such a pet daily needs 350 kcal. If you have a dog of a breed with an average weight of 10 kg, you can feed him half times as much. For breeds with an average weight of 20 kg, you can feed twice as much.

Daily Menu for pets

For a cat or dog of 5 kg
Nutrition: 350 kcal per day.

If you have a dog of a breed with an average weight of 10 kg, you can feed him half a portion extra. For breeds with an average weight of 20 kg you can feed twice as much.

Breakfast
  • 100 cc milk, make it handwarm in the microwave
  • ½ slice of whole wheat bread, stir it in small pieces through the milk

Lunch
  • ½ slice of whole wheat bread with a bit butter
  • alternately ½ slice of cheese or 1 small slice of meat e.g. ham or roasted beef or fried chicken filet, or ½ cooked egg. Put it on the bread and then cut the meal in small pieces.

Dinner
  • alternately 50 gr fresh meat or fish or chicken livers
  • alternately 20 gr pasta or 20 gr brown rice of 1 large potato
  • alternately 2 tablespoons cooked vegetables or 1 fresh tomato

Preparation:
The easiest is to cook 80 gr pasta or rice, or 4 large potatoes. When done divide it into 4 portions, put the portions in small plastic freezer bags and freeze the portions. This way you always have a portion ready to use!

Regarding the meat and fish: it is nonsense that cats would not eat meat and dogs would not eat fish. However, some animals must get used to the new food that they don't know yet. After having tasted it, the problem is over! Also for meat and fish it is the easiest to prepare it in large quantities and divide it in portions to keep in the freezer. Many vets nowadays allow you to prepare baked instead of cooked meat and fish for your pet. And the pets love it! Meat I bake in a bit butter adding some steak seasoning herbs, water, and a little bit of red wine. In wine especially red wine are substances which are good for the blood circulation and help prevent cardiovascular diseases. And the pet likes the taste! I use steak seasoning instead of salt, as too much salt is not good for pets. Fish you can bake in salted butter adding some water, italian herbs and a bit white wine.

Vegetables you can give from the table. Pets even are fond of a tomato salad with onions!
